Activity Description: Go on a scavenger hunt to find and take pictures to find the elements and principles of design in everyday life. This includes 6 photos of elements (line, shape, texture, space, value, and color) and 6 photos of principles (balance, movement, contrast, unity/variety, emphasis, and pattern). Then create a presentation to show the class the different elements and principles found throughout everyday life or nature.
Extension: An extension activity students could do is to create an optical illusion. This project would teach the elements: space (manipulate space to create a sense of depth/shapes) and line (used to create the optical illusion, distort perception, and create patterns). In addition, the project would help teach perspective (depth of a flat surface), contrast (using contrasting colors to make certain areas pop and others to be further), and pattern (creating movement/texture). However, focusing on one of these to teach the objective is best for the students, focusing on lines and perspective would work best for this type of project. Students would also get a chance to look at other optical illusions and see how the elements and principles of design affects art.
